APP Postgraduate Training
Why APP postgraduate residency and fellowship training?
Healthcare organizations across the United States face increasing demands to provide high-quality, patient-centered care while addressing workforce shortages, expanding access to services, and caring for patients with increasingly complex health needs. As healthcare delivery continues to evolve, advanced practice providers (APPs), including nurse practitioners (NPs) and physician associates/assistants (PAs), play an essential role in meeting these challenges.
Postgraduate residency and fellowship training programs provide newly graduated NPs and PAs with a structured transition-to-practice experience that enhances clinical competence, confidence, professional development, and readiness for independent practice. Through intensive clinical training, mentorship, didactic education, and interprofessional collaboration, these programs help prepare APPs to deliver high-quality care across a wide range of practice settings and specialties.
Postgraduate training programs also support healthcare organizations by strengthening workforce development, improving recruitment and retention, fostering clinical excellence, and helping meet the needs of patients and communities. Programs have been developed in primary care, emergency medicine, hospital medicine, critical care, oncology, psychiatry, surgery, neurology, pediatrics, and many other specialties, reflecting the growing demand for advanced practice providers throughout the healthcare system.
As the number and diversity of postgraduate APP training programs continue to expand nationwide, these programs serve as an important strategy for preparing the next generation of highly skilled clinicians and advancing the quality of healthcare delivery in the United States.
